childlike carefree fun

08.21.2002 - 4:27 a.m.

The other night at midnight I went on a very long drive just to get a burger and some fries at the Jack In The Box. It was 40 minutes round trip. Seems a little distant to get a burger. There isn't as much fast food as I'm accostomed to in my general area. Anyway, as I was driving there, the city was dead and there were no cars out because it was late, and I saw these four people riding down Salmon Street on their bikes. No helmets or lights or hand signals or any of that shit, just bikes with people on them. Just like when you're a kid and your parents aren't the overprotective lunatics that parents have become these days. And they were hauling ass, and they seemed like they were having so much fun. They turned onto another street, well one of them turned and the others followed, that last person actually having to cut through a parking lot to catch up. I don't think she was paying attention. They were laughing the whole time, and I could just tell what a good time they were having.

It's been a while since I've had that kind of fun. That just no worries at all, nothing matters but this moment kind of fun. I've had a lot of good times, a lot of nice times, a lot of cool moments, but lately there just hasn't been stupid carefree fun. I've got to find something to do to give me that feeling. You know, when you're a kid you can ride your bike really fast and it seems like such a rush. Then when you're older and you haven't ridden a bike for years the idea just seems silly, at least for me. I think that's why people start jumping out of planes and shit. It's easy to have a great rush when you're a kid, but you have to get more extreme when you're an adult.

Maybe I should go outside and just run as fast and as far as I can until I collapse. I probably wouldn't even make it up the block.

All these thoughts, this wish for that childlike excitement and laughter, is making me feel old. Yeah, I've got to find myself a little piece of fun. Maybe tomorrow. It's my day off.
